Surgery Day
Today was surgery day! I felt like a real doctor getting to dress up in my srubs. I got to watch a total of eight different surgeries. Every sugery day with Dr. O has been very enlightening because before each surgery he would give me a run-down of what he was going to do and what I should be looking for as he performs the surgery. During the surgery I sat in the OR room and watched on a screen what he was doing. I took notes during each one and then afterwards we would sit down and talk about the surgery. I asked many questions and was able to learn so much about different corneal issues. Today, Dr. O mentioned to one of the other surgeons that I was interested in Pediatrics and to my surprise she invited me to watch one of her surgeries as well! Dr. Wong performed a strabismus surgery which is basically a surgery that adjusts the muscles behind the eye. I was particullary interested in this type of surgery because growing up I had an eye disorder which almost left me needing this type of surgery. However, my mother chose the therapy route rather than the surgery route. Having the opportunity to watch Dr. Wong was so special because I learned so much about a common disease in children and I actually got to see up close the actual muscles that are being effected!
