About Magellan

The Magellan Project is a program that can only be found at Washington and Jefferson College and gives students the opporunity to travel almost anywhere in the world to complete an independant research project or intership. While many students plan their trip based on their future career goals and majors, the committee welcomes students to do projects based on anything that intrests them!

Throughout the school year, students construct project proposals that include, a project description, a bibliography, project contacts, a personal statement, and a budget report. These proposals are then submitted to the Magellan Project Committee for review. After review, the committee strives to provide students with financial means to complete their projects.

The students then spend either part or all of their summer traveling and completing their project, usually indepentanly. While doing their research, the student completes a blog which allows them to log their experiences and findings to present back to the Magellan committee.

Traveling and researching alone can be intimidating at first, but the project is designed to support students as they embark on a journey that will teach them confidence and creative thinking. As a whole, the Magellan Project gives students the opportunity to grow both academically and personally while giving them a life changing experiance.
